Read This if You Want to Get Your Hands on More Carbon Capture Software

We’ve said time and again throughout our growing library of blog posts that any sound ESG Strategy must include carbon capture storage and utilization solutions. Those of you starting those efforts from scratch or taking your existing strategies to another level may be looking for additional guidance to put your best foot forward, and the good news is that help is on the way.

According to a recent article by gasworld, energy giant Saudi Aramco (Aramco) is partnering with Aspen Technology to introduce new carbon capture and utilization software featuring integrated modeling and optimization solutions.

These tools help companies determine the optimum balance between emissions and profitability.

Per the article, Aramco, the world’s largest oil producer, could produce the equivalent of 27bn tonnes of CO2 between 2018 and 2039. Aramco also announced plans last year to achieve “Net Zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions across its wholly-owned operated assets by 2050.” Their partnership with Aspen is clearly a massive step toward that goal.

Aspen’s existing solutions include Aspen Plus, which allows operators to do all of the following:

  1. Optimize their energy usage through modeling CO2 capture and acid gas removal.
  2. Calculate total CO2 emissions.
  3. Allow users to transform CO2 from a pollutant to a biofuel feedstock material.

Why Carbon Capture and Utilization Is Important

Carbon dioxide is essential to maintaining our atmosphere’s protective blanket because it traps heat close to the earth. Without it, all the heat we receive from the Sun would escape back into space and make our environment inhospitably cold. With that said, carbon dioxide is also the biggest reason why we continue to experience the negative effects of climate change. Rather than let CO2 float away into our atmosphere and impact global warming, carbon dioxide manufacturing companies have designed and implemented environmentally-friendly processes to capture and sequester these emissions at the source.

By repurposing CO2, we reduce the threat of harmful emissions and redirect the gas toward helping make our world a better place.

Just a few of the main industries that rely on carbon utilization include:

  • Food and beverage
  • Industrial
  • Oil field
  • Construction
  • Medical
